Hometown Hero: Ken Powell
Official Fire District Title: Volunteer Assistant Chief
How long have you been a member of HTFD-23 and why did you join?
I have been an active member of the Fire District for 24 years. I joined the Fire Service at the age of 16 with a friend in the town where I lived at the time. I’m also a fourth-generation firefighter.
What is the best part about being part of HTFD-23?
The best part about being with HTFD is the friendships that are developed within the firehouse and being part of a large family that is always there when you need them.
What do you do when you’re not fighting fires?
When I’m not fighting fires, I enjoy spending time with my family, going on ski trips, taking trips to the beach, supporting my daughter’s softball career (lol) and helping my son with his projects.
Who would you say is the most influential person in your life and why?
The most influential person in my life is my father-in-law. He is a good role model and was a blue-collar worker all his life. He helped me get my first union job and has supported my family and me since the day we met.
What is your favorite movie and why?
Backdraft of course! Given the line-up of actors, Kurt Russell, Robert DeNiro, Scott Glenn, and William Baldwin portraying some of Chicago Fire Department’s finest firefighters was simply an awesome movie.
There is movie about HTFD-23 – what actor would play you?
I would have to say Kurt Russell given his stellar role in Backdraft.
If you had 3 magic beans – what would you wish for?
If I had 3 magic beans, I would wish for an ocean front beach house to watch the sunsets with my wife, a little bit of money to retire early, and for my kids to have all the success and happiness that they deserve in life.
